Life Transition Therapy: Short-Term Focused Treatment for Lifes Big Moment

With the wisdom and experience I have gained in over 15 years of private practice focused on psychodynamic psychotherapy , I’m excited to share a new short-term service that puts an emphasis on helping people work through life transitions.

Traditional psychotherapy practices are built on long-term relationships with patients to help them move towards in-depth insight about who they are and what they want for their lives. And while this will always have a place, sometimes what people need is more concentrated support for a shorter period of time, especially during some of life’s more challenging moments.

What is a life transition?

A life transition is a significant event in a person’s life that can alter their emotions, identity, and purpose. You know when you are in one.

Some common transitions I've helped people through and will continue to focus on are: grieving the death of a loved one, family estrangement or severance, friend breakups, the end of a romantic relationship, career changes, moving into a marriage or long term committed partnerships, perimenopause or menopause, recovering from burnout, welcoming a new baby, moving to a new location/looking for a new community,  and transitions from college into the work world.

What feelings can come up during life transitions?

  • Disorientation

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Depression

  • Difficulty adjusting to new circumstances

  • Feelings of loss or grief

  • Challenges with self esteem, confidence, and identity

  • Avoidance

  • Procrastination

  • Conflict in relationships

What will we do together?

In our first session, we will discuss your goals and what you feel may be your biggest challenges. From there, I will create a custom plan utilizing psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques. This will be tailored to your specific needs to help you through the change you are experiencing emotionally and practically. We will focus on identity development, values, self-esteem, and, of course, the specifics of your particular situation.

For example, if you are experiencing burnout we will go over the effects, causes and  what it looks like to move towards recovery effectively.

Below is an example outline of an 8-week plan for burnout. Keep in mind that your plan will be much more detailed, including weekly homework and exercises specific to your goals, and check-ins outside of our weekly 45-minute session.

Week 1: Grounding and Stabilizing

Week 2: What is burnout? How do we cope with it?

Week 3: How do we identify a toxic workplace, relationship or lifestyle and what do we do if we find ourselves in one?

Week 4: What are my triggers? How are they invoked at work or in everyday life? Where do they stem from?

Week 5: Check in. What coping skills have been working? What isn't working? What do you feel you need more of moving into the coming weeks?

At this point, I will recalibrate your plan based on the answers to these questions. Let's assume, for our example, that this person would like to 1. Respond differently to stressors 2. Feel more self-worth outside of their job, 3. Work on maintaining new skills.

Week 6: Rework your daily routine from week one to make it more practical and effective. Practice daily grounding exercises. Complete a sense of self and values assessment.

Week 7: Write a mission statement for your life.

Week 8: Check in. Are you feeling stabilized? Do you have enough skills to handle stressors differently?

What’s included in your plan?
